We got Ann home and into bed. She seemed relieved to be in her own space and I congratulated myself on at least one good decision. She didn’t say much during the process and fell asleep almost immediately. I gave Josie the spare bedroom and I took the couch.

Deon didn’t like the idea of Josie staying with Ann for a few days any better than I did but we agreed to take it one night at a time. Neither of us were excited to have my bossy and demanding sister in our guest room, mostly because we knew she’d hate being there and make sure we all suffered for it.

Of course, I didn’t sleep much and woke up early. I tiptoed into Josie’s room and nudged her.

“Come on. We need to get home and regroup. I’ve got to go to work and you have school.”

She sat up in bed, wearing an old T-shirt of Fritz’s she’d taken for the night. “I’m not going to school today.”

Guess we were donning our gloves early today. “Oh yes you are. You already skipped one day this week.”

“Only morning classes, and Aunt Ann needs me.”

“And you need school.”

Ann’s muffled voice came from her bedroom. “Go to school, Josie. I’ll be fine.”

I held my hand out to the doorway. “There you have it. God has spoken.”

“I heard that,” Ann said, sounding stronger than last night, if not completely up to her usual fighting shape.

Josie threw back her covers and climbed out of bed. We both walked into Ann’s room. She sat on the edge of her bed, reaching for her crutches. “I promise I won’t do anything too strenuous. I’m going to eat some toast. Probably go back to bed.”

I picked up the crutches and leaned them against the wall away from her. “We’ll get your wheelchair.”

She frowned at me but didn’t protest.

I nodded at Josie. “You get the chair.” To Ann I said, “I’ll slip over to Mi Casa and tell them you won’t be at work today. I’ll see if one of the women can come over and get you breakfast.” Wishing I could still meet her in the pick-up line after school and ooh and ah over the picture she drew for me, I mentally clenched my teeth and said, “Josie can grab a bus and come back here after school.”

It took a while to get everyone situated at Ann’s, rush home to spend a second filling in Deon and Sami on the arrangements, and send us all out in our separate directions.

I barely made it to muster on time. This whole business of rushing to work with that beating stress of being late had to stop or I’d stroke out.

There wasn’t much banter or gossip on the way to our assigned vehicles. I looked forward to getting behind the wheel and having the time to breathe while I drove to my AOR. We didn’t have dedicated vehicles, but the senior agents always had the newer ones. That left the rookies with the more beat-up units.
